You could die before they call you in

What are you going to the ER for? Cough cold symptoms? Broken bones? Cardiac arrest?
I seriously doubt you would die in the waiting room from any of those things except the cardiac arrest.

Emergency rooms are used for the wrong thing sometimes. They are meant for emergencies, not for cold, flu sore throat symptoms. But people use them as a regular doctor office visit. The ER staff has to take what is deemed an emergent illness or injury first. Wouldn't you feel bad going to the ER with some minor complaint and they took you in but made some child who couldn't breath wait?

It's called triage. Sorting the worst from the not that bad.

What can be done about waiting too long in emergency rooms?

Simply, stop the people that run there for every little problem, like dental pain, a sore throat, a cold, chronic pains, etc. These people take time and resources away from those that need emergent care.

Chances are, you aren't going to die before you get called back. Chances are, if you're left to wait, your problem isn't that dire to begin with. Chances are, the problem you have could have been properly taken care of by your primary physician.

Stop the abuse of the system, and your wait will disappear, if you have a true, life-or-death emergency.

Everyone has to wait their turn. Triage decides who is in the most need so we must be patient while waiting. If there isn't a serious emergency and the doctors office is closed many areas now have after hour offices to treat patients that are not as ill.

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do. Emergency rooms choose who gets called back next according to the severeness of the injury/illness. If this is something during normal hours, see your regular physician. If its something really bad, call an ambulance.

Write Dateline 20/20 or your local newstation and local newspaper to expose them. That's the only way that you can effect change. Sad but true.

NOT A WHOLE LOT. AS SOME HAD SAID TRIAGE OR DETERMINING WHOSE WORSE OFF DETERMINES WHO GETS SEEN FIRST. THIS IS ONLY FAIR AND EQUITABLE.
