Look at your vhs and flip it to the side where you can lift up the black latch/door and see if the film/tape is still visible. It could be the film/tape is ripped. If so get a new vhs.

you probably need to clean your vcr. just go to best buy or circuit city and buy one of those vcr cleaning tapes. it looks like a regular vhs tape, but it cleans the gunk inside the vcr.
something similar happened to my dvd player and after using a cd lens cleaner, it stopped doing that!

Check the protection Tab on the cassette , if it is missing or broken then the VCR ejects it to stop you recording over material that you intended to keep.Cheers Pete

There might be an old Memory to record a program , that hasn't cancelled out or just hasn't recorded yet. Try looking in the menu for this and simply cancel it out.
