did you ever think of doing a cascading star design where the original tattoo could still remain there but there would be other things incorporated into to draw attention away from the star you don't care for. maybe some other little stars with some black and grey shading in the background .....just a thought .....good luck

Big and black is going to end up big and black no matter what.
While you certainly run the risk of scarring and it is expensive, I would suggest some laser treatments and then have a very competent tattoo artist cover up with is left behind. You will have a much better canvas to work with even though this will take a long time to accomplish.

You got a huge shoulder
Place some flowers
around it. So that it
looks like a background.
Check with a really good
artist for the best advise.
They can show you examples
of their work on cover ups.
You may have to get some
lazer work done first.

yikes! please don't get tribal. honestly the only thing i can think of that you could possibly get to cover it up is a full backpiece of something with a large dark element to it (i hope you are talking about on your shoulderblade and not on your arm). maybe a geisha with the head on the shoulder or... something of that nature. you could go to a custom tattoo artist that is experienced with coverups. ask them what they can do to it.

You could try a floral design such as a lotus flower or dark rose.
Below is picture of a girl who covered up a similarly dark tattoo with a lotus flower.

How about your birth sign? Of course depending on what it is you may or may not want to have that tattooed on your back. *lol*
Here are some other ideas:

Have an artist even it up, then add little stars around it?
