You don't, really. You use stairtreads of the same species as the floor and stain them. If you're using a laminate, you'd still need solid wood to cover the front edge of the laminate. You'd have to mill it down too thin on the stairs and it would crack when you walked on it, unless you build up the treads under the flooring with plywood. Much simpler to just use premade treads.
If you're using regular hardwood, 3/4" thick, you can mill the nosing out of a piece of the flooring. Strip flooring looks kind of crappy on stair treads, though.

well its kind of a hard question to answer on here in just a few paragraphs. take the carpet off for sure. strip any flooring down to the bare wood. clean it,
it depends on what type of wood flooring youre using. they have the stick-on kind but i dont recommend it.
you just gotta nail it down in between the joints.

put good wood cut to size then stain them ,lots of work and measuring,and did i mention work lol good luck
