Might be Costochondritis. This is where the cartilage that attaches your ribs to your breastplate are damaged. Or you may have bruised the muscles between your ribs.

I have had similar pains and visited a doctor I was diagnosed with Pleurisy... My pain was in the upper right side as well... I sometimes would have a hard time catching my breath because it hurt to breath...

Any chest pains could be serious I would have your Dr check you out. Also, talk to him about Pleurisy.

Symptoms of Pleurisy

The major symptom of dry pleurisy is a sharp, stabbing pain towards the side and lower part of the chest. The pain may also be felt along the shoulders, neck and abdomen. Any movement involving the chest, such as breathing or coughing, will aggravate the pain, which may be accompanied by shortness of breath, a dry cough, and fever.

Wet pleurisy is characterized by similar symptoms, but there may also be difficulty in breathing.

You don't say how old you are, or give any relevant medical history, so let's go with a worst case scenario.

Could be lung cancer, especially if you have coughing with it, and a history of smoking.

If it came on suddenly, and it's sharp, and you can point to an exact spot where it hurts, you might have a pulmonary embolism, especially if you have circulatory problems in your legs, or a sedentary lifestyle.

Other than that, I don't know. Have you seen the movie, "Alien"?

The phrenic nerve which regulates the lungs may be inflamed. Do you have bronchitis or a cold or are you a smoker? See your doctor for a diagnosis.
