We began shaving his hind quarters on the vets suggestion. He originally grew some hair back however after a few shaves he quit regrwoing the shaved portion of hair. Recently he has began to lose the remainder of his hair around the chest and neck. Hiis skin has become a darker color since the hair loss began. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing hairloss of this sort and if so what we could do to stop the hair loss and begin to regrow his coat. The vet has already ruled out mange.

You need to check this website out. There is a disease in Poms that is called the "black skin disease" where the hair falls out and fails to grow back and skin turns black. Your dog could be suffering from this, or it's a possibility that it has an irritant that could not reach the skin verry good before you shaved your dog and now it can. My friend's pom had some dissorder like the one stated above and the only thing that helped her grow any kind of hair back was prednazone. It's worth a look.

Have his thyroid level checked. Poor coat/hair growth can be a sign of hypothyroidism.

Among other things, I would advise you ask the vet if it is possible that he has Cushing's disease. You can research in online if you type in "Cushing's disease in dogs". Our oldest granddoggie may have it, and they are going to test her for it. Apparently it can be quite common in older dogs.
