Chihauhuas are "rats on acid" and often do wierd things. Consider it normal behavior for the breed!!!
Actually, it sounds like when you stopped paying attention to him, he stopped yelping. Hmmmmm, sounds like someone likes extra attention.
Another possibility is that he just stepped wrong and had a minor issue. Then, you "freaked out" and grabbed him too fast. Maybe he was yelping because you picked him up and panicked? Then, when you set him down to find the telephone, he calmed back down?
If there is no swelling, bleeding, infection or limping, I wouldn't worry too much, except to watch him to make sure he doesn't take advantage of "being sick".

He could have thrown his knee out. Chihuahuas (like many small breeds) are prone to luxating patella (slipped stifle or a knee that slides out of place). Some times it hurts them but if it gets put back in place, the pain is relieved. You should call the vet about it during office hours, more than likely it can wait until his next visit (they should be able to give you some advice on the phone about when he should be seen).

Sounds like it might be a "luxating patella." That means that his knee pops out of place. It can be painful, but knee just pops back in to place which is why he was fine a few minutes later. You should set up a visit with your vet, he/she will be able to tell with just a physical exam if that is the problem and they can see how bad it is--in some cases surgery is advised to correct the problem.
It is more common with small breed dogs like yours. This link is really helpful in explaining it: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1569&articleid=457

Unfortunately chihuahuas are one of the small breeds that often have a problem with their knees (part of their hock joint in the back leg). You do need to have your vet exray the dog and see how bad his knee problem is.

It might just have been a cramp in his leg. My dog gets leg cramps occasionally. If it happens very frequently, I would ask a vet about it, otherwise it should be fine.

I think that he could have had a spaz attack, or if you live somewhere where he could have gotten stung by a bee, or twisted his leg, all possibilities. I think if it occurs again call your vet.
