If you're replacing a fixture that is already wired, it's really easy.
1. make sure you turn off the power to that fixture.
2. remove the nut holding the old fixture to the wall and expose the wiring behind the fixture.
3. remove the 3 wire nuts holding the 3 wires. note that black goes to black, white to white, and the bare wire goes to the green ground wire on the new fixture.
4. reconnect the wires, just like you took them off (if you want take a digital photo before you remove the wire nuts)
5. screw the new fixture to the wall with the nut.
6. turn the power back on at the breaker box.
7. enjoy your new light.

In the ceiling box; is there a cable entering the box? If so, what are the color of the conductors within the cable(s)? How old is the house; some older houses did not have ground wires. Look at the wall switch and see how it is wired; if there are only two wires then it wired in a loop configuration. The more info you give will make it easier for folks to help. If it is wired in a loop configuration and there is a black and purple wire connected to the switch; wire the ceiling fixture as follows: connect the two black wires in the ceiling box together with a wire nut; connect the two white wires together with a wire nut; connect the purple wire from the ceiling box to the black wire on the new fixture. The ground wire from the new fixture can be attached to the ceiling box if it is metal. As previously stated, have an electrician do it if you are unsure of doing it yourself.

This is easy stuff.
Turn off the circuit breaker.
Unscrew the fixture from the wall.
Disconnect the wires.
Connect wires to new fixture. (Black to black, white to white)
The green wire is a ground. It has to be attached to a piece of metal. Look for where the other fixture was attached.
Hang up new fixture.
The first time, this might take about an hour.

First, shut off the power supplying the room.
Remove the existing fixture and make note of exactly how that fixture is wired before disconnecting any of those wires. (Normally all black wires in the fixture connect to the black wire in the box, all white wires connect, etc.)
If you are worried you might forget, label the wires in the box with a piece of tape before you disconnect them.

Turn off the breaker or pull the fuse so the light does not turn on. Test it.
Take old light off. You'll see a white wire (called neutral or ground) and a colored wire (hot). Connect each to the corresponding new light wire with a wire nut...get one at the hardware store. Get two.
