Cost of living in Atlanta is actually pretty comparable to living in South Florida. I have not done a lot of research on it, but what I have heard makes me lean that way. Now you will have to remember that any major city you move to, you will get what you are trying to move away from. This is not to discourage you from moving. I love Atlanta, but I would hate for you to move and find more of the same. It is obviously less self absorbed than South Beach, but Midtown is still "chic" and the people there will want you to know it.
Not too expensive is a relative statement depending on what you are used to. You can find a great apartment in the city for $700 per month one bedroom. You can go to the suburbs and improve on that. Now you can get an apartment in the new Atlantic Station and pay a whole lot more. But if you are used to paying $1,300 a month it is not bad.
If you are used to living in South Florida, you may want to live moer in town. There is more to do, and the cost of living will be comparable. The job market is better because this is the centralize location for work. And then you will not have to worry about the traffic as much. Midtown is the nicest area. Virginia Highlands is a fun area with some great bars and rigth in town. Buckhead is sliding in my opinion, but you still have nice places (getting better priced as people move back to midtown), good shopping, and great restaurants.
If you want to get out of the city and save some money that works. I would say Cobb County (Marrietta or Kennesaw) are your best bets. They have good job markets in themselves (depends on what you do of course), great cost of living for rental (homes not as much as it used to), and are still close to the city. As with all the Atlanta suburbs, you do not want to commute into the city from here if you can help it. Traffic is everything you have heard and probably worse than you imagine. You can go to Norcross or Gwinnett, but I don't think they have as much to offer in the way of jobs. And all in all I have like Cobb County better (grew up there though, so not exactly impartial). In any event living in Atlanta is great. The weather is good, not as hot as South Florida but still fairly mild winters. Lots of trees, hills, and all those natural things you do not see down there. You are close to a diverse group of things from mountains, to the city, to the ocean (not horribly far), and all the things that come with these options. Good luck, hope I helped.

I love Atlanta. The job market is really dependent upon your industry. Check out craigslist.com and click Atlanta to see some off the available jobs in the area. The mid-town area is pretty expensive but also the best location as far as entertainment. If you are looking for something a little less expensive but still in the city, I would look into Smyrna or Dunwoody.

Atlanta traffic bites. It's bumper to bumper, but I guess living in Knoxville, TN isn't much of a comparison which is why I think that way. But I have been there many times, my best friend lives there now. There are many outskirts to live around Atlanta that aren't expensive and are still 15 mins out of atl. Atlanta is culturally deversified as well, which is very cool.
Great shops and resteraunts also.

I moved from a major chic city in South Florida to Atlanta the surburbs (of Cobb County) though and i absolutely love it. Atlanta people are so friendly, its cheaper, it's fun fun fun. Only downfall is the traffic, but i got used to it now. I do miss the beaches though, but then again thats why we have beautiful Savannah and Hilton Head.
I have no regrets about moving here...come and join us.

Atlanta is not cheap to live in. Your better off getting a home in a suburb. Reguardless of where you live, you'll be stuck in traffic. Check online for jobs your interested in and keep your options open for something outside of Atlanta. I live in Rockdale county and its not too far from Atlanta. The homes are reasonably priced and theres plenty of job openings. I hope you find what your looking for.
