What exactly did the veterinarian say was wrong with your pet? Did she have a slipped disc, arthritis, etc? Most likely, since your pet was prescribed steroids (dexametasone most likely) their is some sort of suspect of inflammation going on in the spinal column that is causing pressure on the spinal cord and causing your pet to have problems walking. Normally, if an owner can not afford a proper diagnostic work up ( x-rays, CT Scan, MRI, myelogram, etc), a vet will try to give a course of steroids fir a few days and advise the owners to keep the dog quiet ( no running around, no jumping on/off couch/furniture, etc). If there is no improvement or the dog gets much worse ( can not walk anymore, starts walking worse) there is no other choice then a proper diagnosis via the tests I mentioned above. I would need to know if any work up was done on your pet and what was done and what was prescribed exactly to help you further. I come from 15+ years veterinary experience and currently work in the animal physical therapy field so this is something I have quite a bit of experience with. I am happy to help you if i can.

There is no medicine that will correct an injured back. Steroids, like cortisone, will only help with the pain. You can give a dog a basic aspirin once a day to help eliminate the pain. Either put it on your finger and pop it down its throat, or mix it in with the dog's food. 2 baby aspirin will work too, and are easier to get the dog to eat.

If the steroids from your vet are not working it sounds like a specialist is needed. Surgery is usually the only way to help dogs like this when steroids alone do not help. Sorry

Dachshunds often have back problems. You should try and make sure that you dog does not jump up and down on things and do not allow it to sit on its hind legs and beg, this is very bad for a dog with a bad back. It also probably should be carried up and down stairs.

Do not let your dog run up or down stairs if you have any, buy one of those doggie gel beds, and try not to let it jump. Also, go to another vet to get a second opinion. There might be a surgery available to help your dog's back.

I think only a vet can prescribe steroids, but have you thought of prescription pain meds???I have used metacam with a lot of success. It wont heal the problem, but at least the poor thing wont be in pain. Good luck.
