Smoking marijuana during pregnancy may affect your baby's growth and the development of his nervous system. Studies have shown that children who were exposed to marijuana during pregnancy sometimes have problems focusing their attention and solving problems.

Children of heavy pot users may also have problems with short-term memory, concentration, and judgment. (There's no evidence so far, however, that marijuana use during pregnancy causes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

One study even found that young children whose mothers smoked marijuana during pregnancy had a higher risk of leukemia than those whose mothers did not.

What's more, there's no way to know if the pot you're smoking has been laced with other drugs (such as PCP) or contaminated with pesticides, which would put your baby at even higher risk. And using marijuana increases the chance that your baby will have birth defects if you're also drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco.

If you smoked pot before you realized you were pregnant, don't panic. The chance that your baby has been affected is very small. Still, it's important to be honest with your practitioner about your previous use of pot and other recreational drugs. She may want to run some extra tests to be sure your baby is developing normally.

First hand experience, your mileage may vary, but first hand experience is somewhat better than heresy.

My ex's ex wife (the child was by her husband then, not by my ex, but I know her well and I know the now 6 year old child) was recommended by her general practitioner to smoke instead of taking OTC or script drugs for back pain during pregnancy. She had been in an accident earlier that year and was struggling with disc damage, so she couldn't take perc's or other painkillers like that during pregnancy. She only felt it necessary to smoke a handful of times, mostly in the last trimester, but the child was born normally and was quite a big baby. Almost 12 lbs and the woman is smaller, 5'4'' and something like 130 lbs pre-pregnancy. Developmentally, the baby was normal. Progressed normally. Tristan is now a bright, friendly, outgoing young man.

Of course, there's a difference between smoking every day and being exposed every day to smoking or being exposed once in awhile. Everything in moderation.

I by no means recommend it, but if it proves necessary, I wouldn't worry about it. Just know where it's coming from and the people it's coming from. I personally don't smoke myself, but don't have a problem with people that do.

aww. That is real bad. If your mate is pregnant and she smokes then yes, major effects for the baby. But if your mate already had the baby and is just around when smoking then it's like second-hand smoking. Just make sure the baby isn't around to breath the smoke.

First off, Marijuana is amazing, I love it. I'm not a doctor or anything so I can't tell you physiologically what will happen to a kid if you smoke, but you most definitely shouldn't do it. Think about it for a second. If you smoke, your baby is basically smoking too...soo its going to be HIGH the whole time its BRAIN IS DEVELOPING. That's kinda dick in my opinion. Its not like your going to let your kid smoke weed when he or she's in kindergarten so why would you force it to get high before its even born. You'd be playing with fire.

as long as you don't smoke it then no, and if you do smoke it the baby is very unlikely to have mental problems but more likely to have a small birth weight and wont settle down to sleep as well as most babies
my partner smoked pot while i was pregnant and our now 2yr old is way ahead for children his age( he says way over 500 words, knows colours, counts to 20,does puzzles intended for 4-6yr olds) marijuana had no ill effects on him or his little brother

I would not be to concerned about your partner smoking as long as you don't smoke
cigarette smoke does more to a babies health than pot

Second hand smoke is twice as bad!! Make sure you are not aroung any smoke at all while you are pregnant. And yes it will effect your baby in a negative way including mentally.
