It depends on the breed standards..I got a male Yorkie, the lady who gave him to me had already docked his tail, and she was very concerned about his ears standing up or not (she called a lot asking about that)..Well anyway I wouldn't do it, unless you want to show your dog,I think it's just cruel..Oh by the way he HAS flopping ears and I couldn't care less he's smart and beautiful and he's my baby,I love him no matter what!

Some breed standards call for the dogs tails to be docked ( cut off) and so that is why the breeders cut the tails off. Some breeds like Old English Sheepdogs are born without tails.

The practice started in Europe sometime during the plague years. (mid 14th century) because of the belief that Terriers would be bitten on the tail by the rats they were bred to hunt and spread the "black death". (which of course was not true). It then became the norm in England that all dogs except "working dogs" would be taxed by the king, and working dogs were described as those having docked tails. So it then became popular to dock dog's tails for no other reason than to escape the tax.
From that practice it was discovered that health problems in some breeds of dogs could be avoided, so the practice lives on.

Even some 'purebread dogs' were originally bred by mating 2 different kinds of dog. The result of this mating may have been a great breed of dog, but some mixtures created a dog with a tail which was too long. An overly-long tail will cause a dog to have problems with balance. A Bozer is a good example of this.

Tails are DOCKED,not "snipped"!

Tails are DOCKED.
Ears are CROPPED.
According to the BREED STANDARDS!

*My* breed is docked to provide a safe, strong "handle" for use in the field=hunt/working formidable quarry IN GROUND! I use that handle ALL THE TIME!

It is NOT "mean" or "cruel" or "mutilation",like the AR/humaniac/peta-NUTZ MORONS would have you believe! They've never even SEEN the procedures let alone DONE *DOZENS* & rely only on their squeamish imagination.

Go look up the definition of ANTHROPOMORPHISM.

So their tail doesn't swoop off the tablecloth and everything that's on the table!!!

Really...the pet 'standards' dictate what a dog should look like.
Some have ears and tail cut, others tail alone, and some are left as is. Thank GAWD they don't circumcize them!!

To conform to breed standards. i honestly don't beleive in it, but if you want to show or breed your dog, and the breed standard has a docked tail, then you'll need to have this done when it's a puppy.
