I prefer 5 because 99 is prettier scenery but takes like 45 minutes to an hour longer. Plus there is more traffic on 99

Hwy 99 for the scenery & places to eat. Interstate 5 for making time

I-5 is about 20 miles longer but has generally faster driving speeds. 99 passes through more urban areas (IE. Fresno and Bakersfield) and allows for more sightseeing and services. Myself, I would recommend using Amtrak rail between the two cities. The cost is really reasonable and the service is frequent and comfortable. Greyhound also provides express buses between those points but is not as reliable.
