Up to three days and they do work. THC, Cocaine and Opiates are what they commonly test for and herion is an opiate.

Yes, home drug tests really work. They use the same science that hospital drug tests use.
Heroin has a very short half-life. It is then metabolized (turned into) a morphine and a different form of morphine. These each have longer half-lives.
So, direct dection of heroin is only accomplished for a few hours after use. Then, the test detects the metabolites. One of the metabolites only comes from heroin, or another, rarely used pain killer. This pain killer is not used often, therefore, detection in the urine means that the person used heroin. This can be detected for 24-48 hours after use, depending on the person.
To make matters even more complicated, much heroin is not pure. The impurities, or other chemicals/drugs that are mixed in, may be detected. The amount of time that these are detected could be hours to weeks, depending on what impurity was added.
Then there's the matter of the hair. It's detectable there for the amount of time that you've had the hair. If you're going to shave, then you'll have to do it all. They can test hair from the head, pits, arms, leg, scotum, and even the butt crack. If you shave you're whole body, then that'll likely be enough evidence to get you.
Your best bet is avoid the heroin altogether, cuz you're gonna get caught. Prison is ugly, unless you like rough rogering. Besides, if the impurities don't kill you, the heroin will. Good luck.

HEROIN can stay in your system for up to 72 hours, depending on how you used it. Even if you do clean out your system, injection scars will remain if you shoot up. I don't need to tell you how stupid it is to use that crap. If they wanted to use a hair sample, rather than a urine sample, you'll be hosed. That doesn't fade away.
