Such an easy question. One word: Ego.
Men are full of testosterone, and, it goes back to their primal need to be the biggest, strongest, toughest, tallest.... Some want women to feel weaker and smaller to them so that they can feel strong and protective. It's a natural urge... I'm not insulting men, mind you, I love them.
Like on the nature programs, when the bull-elk lock horns, they are proving who is an alpha male. (the one that will get all the girls)
Don't take it personally, and don't slouch to make them feel better, just keep your self-confidence and you will find a strong enough man (an alpha male) that doesn't need that reassurance to build him up. The very best men like strong confident women, the rest are just the alpha wannabes.

Because short guys have been told their entire life, that they are short for a guy. I bet there isn't a day that goes by, without those short guys thinking about how short they are and how they wish they were taller. They probably get jokes thrown at them all the time. For some reason, guys think that if women think they are too short, that will also mean that they are little short in the, uhhh...lower department, as well!
I bet them asking you how tall you are is just a nervous, uncomfortable-about-my-own-height question. I bet they try to make it seem like you, the woman, is too tall, and that they are "normal" height!
Men!

Maybe things have changed, but when I was growing up, the last thing a girl wanted to be was tall, and the last thing a boy wanted to be was short. Society can be unmercifully cruel to both. Every tall girl in my neighborhood was always looking for a guy who was taller than them, especially if they were going to the prom. It was a major issue. And almost every short guy I knew felt they didn't measure up, and that women preferred someone taller than them. Not good for the self esteem. I'm sure you've heard of the expression "Napoleon Complex".
I find it strange and unexplainable that short guys are asking how tall you are. Maybe they are just in awe of you.

haha, if your 5-11 I am sure you get that from more than just short guys. I am 6-2. And when I see a 5-10 ish girl in heels, I fall in love and just have to ask... ;-) I would guess that some shorter guys would be a bit intimdated and thats the only thing they could come up with to ask ya..

Well I wouldn't worry about those guys too much I have the opposite problem. I am 5'4" and it seems that taller girls have a complex about dating shorter guys sometimes too. I guess some people base their relationship on superficial stuff or they are so brainwashed by the media that they think having a guy taller than them is really what matters.

They ask you silly questions cause they want you to notice them. Most short guys are crazy about tall women.

insecurities... if a guy comes up to and is short most of the time by him calling out his own mistakes he kind of beats you to the punch that way it doesn't leave like an awkwardenss... you know what I mean? It's like when someone has a zit and they know that everyone they see sees it... they kind of just tell you they have it... see... if you need more help let me know.

I guess men view themselves as the dominant species so when they have to look up to a woman that makes them feel inferior?
