I got my one year old dog about three weeks ago. She is a mix between a jack russell and a manchester terrier, if it matters. Until now, we have let her on the couch. She has no sense of where it is okay to jump & she constantly jumps on people's faces and sensitive spots. Now we think it would be a lot better if she was off the couch. How should we go about doing this? Does anyone have any personal experience with this? Any answers are helpful besides the get a dog trainer ones. That would be the next step, and this is my first. Thanks.

there's a product that you can get @ petco/petsmart (sorry, dont know the name) that you spray on the furniture- it doesnt damage it and it smells good to humans but the chemical ingredients react differently with dogs and they avoid it. that should help. best wishes!:)

This isn't a habit that will be broken overnight. First you let her know it was okay now you say no not anymore.
You will have to train her to not get on the furniture. When you are home make sure that she is on a leash each time she attempts to get on the couch gentle tug on the leash and use the phrase AH,AH.in a firm voice. Look for a product called a Gentle Leader these are great and makes training or correcting very easy for owner and dog.
If you leave her loose through the day when you are at work then you are fighting a losing battle... as this is an immediate correction situation. I advocate the use of crates when an owner isn't home this keeps the animal safe and sound. But this too has to be done properly crates should be a safe haven for the animal not a punishment.
Good luck as you are dealing with a double terrier and are known for their tenacity and stubbornness.

teaching "off":
1. Dogs do not speak English. Teaching any trick involves rewarding the dog with great treats and marking the good behaviors you do want by saying "Yes!" and treating immediately, or using a clicker and a treat (C/T). Chanting "sit, sit, sit" or in this case, "Off, off, off!!!" will not help and will confuse your dog.
2. Never reward your dog for jumping on the couch. Instead, reward your dog a bunch for being off the couch - toss treats away from the couch, reward her for sitting, downing, etc a lot and always toss the treats away from the couch. If she can't resist jumping up on her people when they're on the couch - just stand up. No need to punish. Stand up so that she has to jump off. If she decides that this is a fun game, time for a time out. Put her in her crate or in another, 'boring' room : dog learns, " I jump up, game is over!"
3. When your dog jumps up on people, just turn away...Remove the reinforcer (dog gets to iteract with you) and the behavior will stop. It won't stop immediately (dogs learn through repetition) but be patient and your dog will learn.

ok, how some distance of a fall is it from the settee to the floor?? mine is barely approximately sixteen inches or so. And is it carpet that he fell on or complicated wood flooring. additionally did he cry while he fell or no longer. My daughter has fallen a pair time from 12 mos up ...in simple terms an awkward, getting to understand to stroll toddler. no longer something unusual. The well being practitioner advised me that in the event that they fall from their very own top and at their very own velocity...then they are frequently nice..yet to maintain an extensive look ahead to 2-3 hours to make advantageous that they are performing widely used. yet...i could nonetheless definately call your well being practitioner because of the fact he's soo youthful and would not consult with you or teach many signs and indications. you're no longer a foul mom..don't sense undesirable. issues take place. desire all is unquestionably.

Talk about a hyper mix of breeds, you are going to go insane.
It is going to be difficult to keep her off the couch. I would give her that and work on her manners toward people. A spray bottle with water is the only answer. She will detest it. But it doesn't hurt and I have never seen a dog that it did not work on.
You need to buy her a doggy treadmill..................

The only thing that has worked for our dogs after spending to much money on pet store crap, is a squirt bottle with plain old water in it. Funny how they love to play in the water and love bath time, but once they get the squirt from the bottle they hate it and will go and lay on their pillow beds.

lol... it will be hard to break this habit since she already thinks that your couch is her territory... but with some training, a pet bed, you can get her to stop... Get a dog bed and place it near your couch... persuade her to get on the bed by luring her on with a toy or treat... once she is on the bed tell her to lie down... continue this until she goes to the bed at will... each time she jumps onto the couch... say "no" and direct her onto her bed... she will soon learn that her bed, rather than your couch, is the proper resting place.
Good Luck :)

constantly put her on the floor when she jumps up and tell her no stay down. you could probably get a water bottle and squirt her with warm water to so that she would connect it with the couch.

My puppy knows she's allowed on the couch and knows not to jump on people. The training is key. When she jumps up on people pull your knee up so it hits his chest. Say DOWN at the same time, and he will soon get the hint he's not to jumpn people.
