The water cycle describes how water moves around the planet in different forms. Ocean water evaporates into the atmosphere and forms clouds. These clouds move over land and drop their water as precipitation onto the land. Some of that water soaks into the ground; the rest of it stays on the surface (like in puddles, streams, and rivers). The water on the ground gradually works its way downhill or downstream toward the ocean again. This is called runoff. The water joins the ocean and starts the process again. Water that is dropped in the form of snow on top of mountains takes a long time to melt and flow down the mountain back to the ocean, and water that soaks into the ground moves very slowly (or not at all), so we call this water storage, where water might stay for centuries.
