I heard this saying a few times, but I have no idea where it came from. Help me out here!

Soup or salad are the traditional first course of a dinner served in courses. "Soup's on" is a way of saying "come on in, dinner is starting".

During the depression times. When people would stand in lines
for hours and hours in hope for a job or a place for their families to have a roof over the heads and a place to sleep. This was basically the only type of food served with either a piece of bread or a apple. Good ask someone in your family that may remember these old times.
