won't need tremendous excersice,
does well with children,
allergies aren't a prob. with me,
preferably a medium dog, and a cute one, not one of those really ugly pale looking resembles a mop looking dog.

i also don't have the money for extensive grooming sadly, so probably short hair would be best...or at least that's what I'm thinking.

I think as somebody here already suggested that you should go to akc.org and find a dog that fits you there.Somebody suggested a lab, which I think is a great dog, but they do shed a lot. I have a weimaraner, he does need activities like regular walks, he doesn't shed much, he's really great with kids, very loyal, great watch dogs as well, but then he's a little big since you asked for medium, maybe a female weimaraner is not as big and would do, they are truly very beautiful. Or try Vizsla it's almost the same as weimaraner, only a little smaller, they're both hunting dogs but great breeds with aristocratic features, they're friendly, fearless, alert and obedient.True family dog. Good luck :-)
I have myself allergies, but never had a problem with my weimaraner, I bathe him once a month in oatmeal shampoo, I hardly ever touch him with a brush, mostly before and after bath.

Ok despite the fact that you said no poodles, the breed I would highly recommend is called a Shih-poo. It is a cross between a Shih-Tzu and a Toy poodle. I have had two of these dogs and they are without a doubt the best dogs I have ever had. They are extremely intelligent and not high strung as you would expect a pure bred poodle to be. Mine requires little to no grooming--the most I usually do is brush him when he gets a bath. He loves being outside and inside, so during the summer we let him into the backyard for a few days and then bathe him and let him in the house for a few days. He is extremely loyal and is wonderful with my younger cousins who are ages 2, 5, and 7. He does not shed, is very trainable, and does not require too much excersise since he is bred to be indoors. He doesn't look like a poodle at all so hopefully that would help in your decision making. The thing about these dogs is you never know how wonderful they are until you meet one. Shih-poos are becoming more popular so chances are someone you know may have one. I would highly recommend visiting to see if it is a dog you would consider.

people really don't read the question do they. When you say a dog that doesn't shed do they not know that huskies german sheppards and any short haired dog sheds. Only dogs that have hair that grows do not shed such as the poodle, yorkie, maltise. Aslo hypoallergenic.there maybe others wheather they are good with kids depends on if they are raised with kids. Also are your kids good with dogs. or wild? I have one that I have to teach the child not the dog. the other would be fine with a dog. But a puppy is a puppy and you are going to get problems just as a child is going to color on the wall after you just painted it. but puppies grow up faster than children do. I cut all my yokies hiar and toe nails myself. It doesn't take much to be showed just once how to do it. All dogs do need some excersice just as you do. depending on the size of your house and if they can chase a ball in it is exersice. though I take mine up to the soccor field once in a while. check www.akc.org for list of dog breeds and what they require

Personally Boxers are the greatest friends in the world. But since you want a dog that does not need a lot of exercise, Boxers are out of the Question. How about a Basset Hound or maybe even a Beagle.

I would get a whippet! From a vet's point of view they are one of the healthiest pure-bred dogs you can get, they are great with kids, very gentle and very low maintainence. They may look like they need alot of exercise but really only need a short off lead run daily, less than many breeds. They are happiest curled up on something soft next to their favorite human.

It sounds like you really should not have a dog.
If your stipulations are: no shedding, no tearing up furniture and little exercise(?)
All dogs shed, all dogs need attention and exercise...and you have to monitor a dog around small children.
Perhaps you should start off slow and get a cat. See how much of a committed pet owner you are.
ps: I'm really quesioning some of the people's suggestions: German Shepherd? The second highest shedder after a Malamute...Needs tons of exercise, and can tear apart a sofa in 15min.
No terriers. High prey drive, needs exercise.
Remember: all dogs need attention and training.

Try a beagle. Keep it pinned up they are known for wondering off. I Pomeranians and I also have 4 kids. One of my kid has asthma. We brush and bathe every 5to10 days and the walk 1 to2 times a day. They house broke quickly and they have survived living with kids ages ranging 1 to 8. But any who. Beagles are cool too.

I went online to animal planet and took a go selector test for you and you're top 3 choices would be: Basset Hound Saluki and a Welsh Springer Spaniel. But you should go over there your self because on the test I assumed some stuff for you.

If you are wanting a Med size dog I would suggest a Welsh Corgi. We had a Primbrook. They are cute and good with children. They are herd dogs so they will try and herd children. They get around 20 pnds however mine got about 25 pnds(small children feed her their food). They are good watch dogs but not yippy. GOOD luck!

You should most definatly get a weimaraner they aregreat family dogs, gaurd dogs and have ver, very short hair. You can type in weimaraner in any serch and get the full detail. I have a male weimaraner, he is mixed with lab but looks totally weim. He is supper smart and only 4 1/2 months old. But they need alot of space like a yard and alot of attetion as much as possible is great. And i know for a fact they house train very easily. For their fur the best is oatmeal baths and brushing weekly. I say oatmeal baths because my dogs fur pokes me and makes me itch. I just found that antidote yesterday and did it and so far it works, oh and also Extra Virgin Olive Oil in their food.
Okie Dokie,

P.S. Good Luck?!?
