I desperately want to adopt a cat when i turn 18 in a few months, but my dad is a bit allergic, and isn't even a fan of cats altogether. I'll pay for and take care of the cat myself, so my dad's allergy and dislike of cats are the only things standing in the way.

I should have added that my dad's also allergic to dogs and we had one for ten years; he sneezed a bit at first and then that went away. So, his health isn't actually at risk. And he says he dislikes cats but everytime he sees one of my friends' cats he pets them. I think he just doesn't think I'll take good care of it. What I'm really looking for is a good argument to whatever he brings up as reasons not to get a cat.

Please think of your dad's comfort. If he is the one providing for the family, he should get the first choice of whether or not to get a cat. Being allergic to the cat will make him have a scratchy throat, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing. Some people can get used to it after a while, but that wouldn't be very nice for your dad to come home to.

How your Father reacts to cats should be taken into consideration first and foremost. If it isn't a severe reaction he might be willing to try it for a couple of weeks.

My Father was allergic/asthma but only to other people's cats he was fine with his own.

The type of cat also is important long hair cats are the worst, short haired cats are better but hairless cats would probably be the best.

Why don't you use the inter-net and research the hairless breeds get your parents involved in your research. Seeing the cats might help as well as seeing the different breeds available.

I commend the fact that you want to adopt a cat when you turn 18 but they are a long term commitment so be sure you are getting what you and your Dad can handle. Just a bit of info most shelters will not adopt out a pet if all parties are not in agreement or because of allergies. This is where many of the cats in the shelters come from.........people not knowing they are allergic.

Good Luck in your search

I don't know of anyone who held a purring kitten and didn't like it. Ask him if you can do a test run to see how life would be with a cat, if he still doesn't like it you could always get your own place or wait. You can always go to the shelter and help out because they always need volunteers! I'm sure that wouldn't be a big deal.

The allergy to cats isn't the cat itself. It is the dandruff and loose hair they naturally shed. My fiance and his family are all allergic to cats but we have 3 and he is content with having them.

Ways to stop an allergic reaction before they start are bathing the cat, daily brushing, keeping him/her away from your dad's bedroom/bathroom/ or any place he spends a lot of time at. There is also shots that will cease the symptoms of the allergy.

I would ask for a trial and for him to try these different ways of relieving his allergy. If he still cannot stand the cat, then i guess you will have to wait or find other options.

Good Luck!

You MUST be considerate of your Dad's allergy..even tho he may not like cats...and his allergy may have a lot to do with that..(not wanting a cat in the house) Don't subject your Dad to anything that would harm his health..it can/could get worse than it already is. Even tho you "pay" or and take care of your new cat...your Dad's health concerns should be your first priority...YOU CAN ALWAYS GET A CAT/KITTEN WHEN YOU MOVE OUT. But don't jeapordize your Dad's health just because "you want something".......!!!!

you are going to be an adult soon, but you shouldnt move out just yet...take your time but do act a bit more responsible....think about your dad you might want to wait a while and just talk them into it slowly and show them pics or something and he'll end up cracking...but make sure that you keep your word and take care of your cat and maybe keep it away from your dad...good luck

Get a Maine Coon. They are supposed to be hypo-allergenic. I once knew a lady who had a Maine Coon even though she was allergic to cats, and it didn't bother her at all.

Cat allergies are from the dander and saliva, not the actual fur. Maine Coons apparently produce very little dander compared to other breeds.

No, the only thing standing in the way, is you growing up and getting your own apartment and you can have as many cats as you like.

Did they raise you to be so selfish that you really don't care about your father's comfort in his own home? Please...grow up, you're going to be an adult soon.
