everybody has different reasons. some people do it because they think it looks cool, some do it to rebel. some to pay tribute to loved ones and some for artistic reasons.
i have always been fascinated with tattoos and wanted one for as long as i can remember. i got one on my 18th birthday.
now i get them because they are art. my tattoo artist is a custom artist who does all customized work. he is a print artist as well working with acrylic and watercolor paint. he never ceases to amaze me and i love his art. so that's why i get tattoos.

I can't tell you why everyone gets tats, but I can explain mine. First of all I just think they are neat, it may sound silly, but I feel kind of a kinship when I see people with other work.
* I was a victim of a sexual assualt that really messed me up in a lot of ways and when I came out of a deep depression I had a skull and crossbones tattooed on my ankle. For me it was just something badass that reminded me I was strong and don't have to take crap from anyone. When I look at it everyday it gives me a sense of strength.
* I also have a back piece of shooting stars I had done in memory of someone very close to me who committed suicide. I designed them instead of a typical memorial tat because I wanted a symbol of shooting for the stars even when life is tough.
So that's why mine are important to me, they are just like everything else, if you don't like them don't get one. I may not like someones haircut, but it doesn't give me the right to say things about them or assume they're trash. I would just encourage you and everyone to keep an open mind because that art is very important to someone for whatever reasons.

I get mine because I think Body Art is sexy. My tattoos are an outward expresion of my inner personality, they do not define who I am but clarify what is already there. Several of mine have special meaning as well, I have one to memorialize a child I miscarried, I have the M&M guys to represent my husband and I (Michael & Marcie), I got a butterfly for my mother. I'm sure each person has their own reason.

They are works of art, just take a close look at them sometime -they are quite beautiful, watch the show Miami Ink and see what they do and they also show why many decide to get that tattoo. I have always wanted one, so far I haven't had the chance to get one.

We all have different reasons. Some people get them because they think they look cool. (these people shouldnt be getting tattoos, because if their only reason for getting them was because they look cool, they probably wont like them for long) Some people get them as a memorial, some people get them to mark a certain point in their lives. I got mine because I love art, and the idea of having it on my body has always appealed to me. I know everyone says "thats going to look horrible in 50 years" But every time I look at my tattoo, I'll remember that point in my life, and while it may not be "pretty" anymore, I know, I'll always love it.

The reasoning for tattoo's is going to differ from person to person.

the reasons can go on forever .....
personally I have and get tattoo's for artistic reasons I get tattoo's of things that I like....
Tattoo's are pieces of art that stay with you forever.

Some people think it's cool (think teenagers), some people think they're sexy, others do it for better reasons like they lost someone and they want a permanent reminder... it's just something people have done for a long time i guess. It's gone mainstream in the last couple decades, but there is still that forbidden element to it. I personally wouldn't want one since I am so fickle and wouldn't want to deface myself like that, but to each his own I guess. They can look good on some people... i'm just tired of all the 15 yr old skanks with the lower back butterflies thinking they're so cool.

Personally, I get them because I love them, for me, tats are a form of self expression. I currently have 4 and I'm getting numbers 5 & 6 next week. The 4 that I currently have are all tributes and one of the ones that I'm getting next week will also be another tribute tat.

We get our tattoos as a badge of honor , to tell a story , to honor a loved one or just to simply beautify and brighten our skin. A tattoo is not just ink in skin its our lives on our sleeves (literally)

everyone has their own reason. Some do it to portray and image, some for looks, some just because they like the art of tattooing...I did it to celebrate a personal triumph and as like a tribute to my daughter.
