XP is the first Windows OS that I really like. Is Vista so much better than XP? I have an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ with 1GB dual channel DDR2-800 and Windows XP x64 edition

I wouldn't Vista already is having problems for people. Mostly due to compatibility issues. Much of your existing programming might not work with Vista. You would have to go out and buy it as well.

Then there is the issue of the now famous Microsoft security holes. It is a matter of time before we hear about viruses or worms that get through Vista.

I suggest you wait to upgrade for several more years. There will no doubt be a newer Windows by then anyways. By the way there are a lot of people still using Windows 95, 98, & 2000, so you are ahead of all of them.

It looks like you have all the requirements to upgrade, but you left out your hard drive space. For Home Premium (the one everyone wants) you need 15gb hard drive space. You may also want to switch to mac. I did it and while I am not part of the apple cult I do think they are better. Unless you need one for work/gaming, windows only upsides. From what I have seen Vista is about as good as Mac OS X Tiger (current version). Mac can be pretty expensive, so if you want to go with Windows, I would wait a few months until they get all the kinks sorted out. If you have <$1000 budget I would go for mac, but otherwise, wait a few months until the kinks are sorted out.

At the moment, I'd say there are too many questions about Vista to upgrade:

1) Is it really vast improvement over XP?
2) Have they resolved the major bugs yet?
3) Microsoft claims it's safer, but is it really?

Until these question are answered more satisfactorily, I would hold off on the upgrade.

I had the same question. Then one of my friends bought a laptop with Vista and from what I noticed its not that much better. Unless your planning on playing some of the newest games that will need to use vista. If you wanted to your computer should run Vista Home Premium.

I've had Vista for a few, hated it, if you are experienced vista is NOT for you because it's designed for a novice to use. And of course it is highly buggy. Plus it has a bunch of useless things like optional side toolbar.
So personally I would stick to XP.
And if you just want th visual you can download things to make XP look like vista but run like XP.

Hope it helped.

have used vista, for now it is just a prettier version of XP.

Stick with what you have for at least 6 months and then i think directx10 will become standard and u should start looking at getting it :)
