An altar is a place of sacrifice. It faces in the direction of the power to whom you are making a sacrifice. Typically this would be east in most pagan rites, though it depends on what you mean by "witchcraft".

An altar made of crystal is no more significant than an altar made of cardboard.

It depends on what kind of witchcraft you follow -- some witches have no altar at all.

In Wicca, north or east are the most common directions. The altar can be positioned at the north or east quarter, or in the centre of the cast circle facing in one of those directions. Personally, I favor north because it allows the sun to rise and set over the altar (symbolically speaking) and also allows for the placement of ritual statuary at the back of the altar with the Goddess candle in the west and the God candle in the east.

That said, my day-to-day altar faces east because the east wall was the one that had space to set the altar up. ;-)

A crystal altar? An altar with crystals on it? Certainly possible; some crystals have associations with certain directions and elements. An altar MADE of crystal? Ouch... that would be both very expensive and quite fragile!

EDITED TO ADD: To greeneyeddevil's post... you'll find very few witches making sacrifices of ANY kind at their altars, at least in my experience. Well, except for a few pinches of incense, or perhaps a honey cake or a piece of fruit. ;-)

In most Wiccan traditions (not all of which call what they do "witchcraft," FYI), altars face North. In some, they face East. In reality, all of the four directions are sacred, clear out to the horizon, and an altar may legitimately face in whatever direction the worshipper feels called to look toward the sacred.

A "crystal altar" may mean different things to different people. It is used in some traditions to describe a particular meditative practice. In that context, it does not refer to an actual artifact or construction at which one would worship. You would do well to refer this question to whomever you have heard using the term.

In Wicca, Altars generally face North, however, in certain traditions of Non-Wicca Witchcraft, they face East. Right now, mine is decked out in an elemental fire theme, so it's to the South.

I suppose it you wanted to spend a bunch of money, you could have a crystal altar.

do no longer understand which way it would face yet once you prefer yet another altat for something like Tarot readings or Rune Stones then this altar desires to be made out of crystal. wish this facilitates.

"An altar is a place of sacrifice." - Now why would you say that? I've never sacrified anything on my alter. Nor has any of the 624 people that are part of my coven, ever sacrificed anything.

As for direction. My alter at home faces east. The one at our grove faces south.
