OK, first of all, the sacred cow is not worshipped, simply honured and respected.

Secondly, there are many animals referred to in the Hindu religeon. Some of these are representations of the Gods... as has been said, Ganesha - is not an elephant, but is represented as having some of the features of an elephant to portray things like wisdom.

There are also many avatars of the Gods who present as animals, such as lion, turtle etc.

Saying the Hindus worship animals is the same as saying Christians do - isn't Jesus often refered to as "the lamb of God"? So Christians worship sheep do they?

Please don't confuse analogy & representation with 'worship'.

We love GOD so much that we worship Him. God created animals and we therefore treat them with respect because we do not like to see any creature suffer unnecessarily. We do not worship animals. God sometimes appears with some animal features, such as when He manifests as Ganesha - but this does not mean we worship elephants. We worship only God, and sometimes He has taken these forms in order to show certain philosophical truths, which are too deep for you to understand, because you do not want to hear the truth.

I think for the answer to that you just need to look at Americans. You can see the same thing developing here. Many people have already elevated animals to the level of humans and the next step is to turn them into gods.

Brahman, Ultimate Reality, can be seen/demonstrated in all of creation. The cow, because it gives all of itself in both life and death is the most revered.
