A young lab mix was just abandoned a few days ago and we decided to take it in. We believe he is around 2 or 3 months old. He is afraid to stay outside at night, and this leads to the potty in the house problem. I took him out around 1 am this morning and stayed outside with him for around 30 mins but he just sniffed everything and did nothing. This morning I found his little "gift" directly in front of our door. How do I go about house training him?

keeping him in a crate at night is a plus a dog will not eliminate where it sleeps and eats, and at his current age he has no bladder control yet. its pretty much a hit and miss thing, but take him out in morning after he eats and during the day at about every 2 hours reward him when he does go outside it takes some time but he will get the hang of it. they are about 5-6 months old before they actually have the ability to hold it.

Well, you probably have more than one, you just have to find it. You need a crate. the dog won't go where it sleeps. Take it out every hour and it will get the hint where it should go. if it goes in the house, take the mess outside and show him where you want it. Always take treats outside with you and priase alot for going outside. DO NOT EVER punish harshly for going inside, that will cause more problems. Good luck with you new puppy.

You need to keep the pup in the same place at night, For example a laudry room or bathroom. Where ever the pup is put down newspaper. If the pup makes a mess somewhere in the house example pees than lay newspaper on top until it is on the paper. Leave it there so pup can smell to know where to go next time. Taking pup out helps but it must get use to it's surroundings first. Usually taking him out around every 20 to 30 minutes. A lot of work. Good luck.

You house train him by putting him in a cage when you leave and when you go to bed and you just have to take him out every half hour so he gets used to going outside. Also reward him for doing both buisnesess but if he does both in one trip give him one treat.
