first u need to train him to fetch while on a leash throw the ball run with him to pick it up and reward him after he gets used to this try it off leash also its important that he knows to come when called . eventually put all the steps together and he should be able to fetch for you.

I honestly wish I knew! I have been trying to teach by three dogs to fetch since I got them... but they always end up taking whatever I through and chewing it up!

take your dog to a dog training class they should be able to help you.
