I proposed to my wife when we were getting ready to go out to the Fringe Festival (A collection of plays). I had brought home a helium filled balloon for her, and while she was getting ready I tied the ring on part of the string that was tied to it and loosely tied it around the neck of our cat. When she came out I made like I was trying to get it off the cat (No the cat wasn't hurt, in fact it was playing with the string).
"Honey, Duke got this stupid ribbon wrapped around his neck. You want to see if you can get it off?"
It took her all of 30 seconds to get it off and here was this ring dangling from it. I don't know if she burst into tears because she was happy that Duke was okay, or if she was happy about the proposal. I think both reasons.
No cats were harmed during the making of this proposal.

I just proposed to my boyfriend. He is German and *loves* Kinder Überraschung (Kinder Surprise), a hollow chocolate egg with a toy inside. I created a real surprise by putting a note inside: “Willst du mich heiraten?” (Will you marry me?). He was so shocked that the first thing he said (after a VERY long pause) was “Are you serious?” Eventually he overcame his shock enough to say “yes”!
(It was challenging getting the egg resealed and rewrapped. It was also equally difficult to carry a chocolate egg around India without it completely melting.)
