Ask if you will be provided with a uniform or can you wear your own. Most places allow jeans and comfortable polo type shirt. Rubber bottom shoes/sneakers a must. Good idea to have a change of clothes and shoes with you.

If you will be cleaning cages, walking dogs, etc., then wear something you don't mind getting really dirty. I volunteered at a no-kill pet shelter for a short time and there's no point dressing up nice if you're going to be scooping out litter pans and cleaning doggy throw-up off the bottoms of cages.

They generally don't ask you to do the dirty work on the first day. Jeans should be OK.

People usually wear hospital scrubbs. You can get them cheap at Wal*Mart.

Old jeans and t-shirt. You'll be handling the animals.
