Did your vet tell you it will cost a fortune? Many hernias self correct as the pup grows. The ones that don't are easily corrected at the time of her spay surgery. I can't see why it would add all much to the cost of the initial spay surgery.

When taking in a rescue dog you risk some things. But, here are a few things to think about regarding the rescue...
1. Did they do a vet check?
2. Did they give you the proof?
3. If there was no Vet check is there a policy regarding return of the animal?
When adopting you also have to understand that these dogs come from some of the worst conditions and sometimes health problems such as these are un known. Some rescues dont have a waiting period of time before a animal is adopted, any dog received from a pound by a rescue should be kept for a minimum of 10 days to evaluate and check for infections.
As for the hernias you need to ask your vet to really explain the options and treatments.
There are also some programs to assist in vet care for emergencies.
Try going to Petfinder.com and pets911.com and checking their links for animal care. I know in TX We have a program called Pet Trust that sometimes helps with things like this. Humane Society of the US and SPCA have clinics all over the US that offer low price care.
I really wish you luck.

A hernia repair is much the same as it is for humans. the surgeon goes in and patches the weaken areas of the abdomen with sometimes patch webbing to make the wall of the abdomen stronger. Many pet live long and healthy lives with these repairs. Only the vet can tell you if expects any complications or re-repairs once the dog stops growing.
If you have take her to a vet you really trust then see if they can work with you about payment.
I am sorry that the rescue didn't inform you of these medical issues with the pup, In my opinion they should have.

My pekingese had a hernia. The vet took it off when he neutered him. The recovery time was like 2 weeks about. He had the Elizabethian collar on to keep him from licking (the big white funnel collar). Its not that expensive either. My vet didnt charge any extra on top of the neutering but I guess it depends on where you go. Is your puppy spayed/neutered? If not the vet will do it when you get him/her neutered/spayed. If your puppy is, and they remove it, it shouldnt cost that much (100 tops) since its minor surgery.

If you don't want to spend that much, I suggest calling around vet offices to see how much they charge for the spay/neuter and removal of hernia's .. or just the removal of the hernia's if he/she is already neutered/spayed.

Good luck!
& kudo's for rescuing a life :]

I had a female with a hernia. The Vet removed it when she was spayed. It didn't cost much, maybe an extra $25.00 or $50.00.
I now have a male that has one. The Vet said he didn't want to remove it when he neutered him. The Vet said if the hernia was soft to the touch, it would not have to be removed. If it is hard to the touch or becomes hard, it has to be removed.
This was two different Vets. If I had given it any thought I would have had the hernia removed in the male too.

But they are nothing to worry about and like I said, not that expensive. Ask your Vet about soft and hard hernias.

Surgery went easy, recovery about 10 days, no problems. I wouldn't worry too much about it, it is an easy surgery.
