I've lived in Quito for a year, was working there.
Quito is not a dangerous city as a whole, I would recommend staying out of the south of the city if you're that worried.
Quito is clearly divided into South and North by 2 sets of tunnels, in general the north is very clean and safe, all the hotels are there and most tourist attractions. The downtown plaza is right in the middle so be alert when you go visiting the churches there.
There is NO need to carry any sort of firearm.

None are that dangerous but, unless it has changed considerably, don't take much with you if you go in to the Old Town area.

I was advised to have a small amount of money in case I wanted to get a drink / taxi back and to carry my camera in my hand. The danger is with bag slashers not direct confrontation.

I had no problems but I was even more "on my guard" that I would be normally.
