because he didn't like the dinner you cooked him.

As in, he/she goes into the freezer and gets the ice cream out and digs into it rather than eating what's on his plate.

Wasn't this a scene in that movie "Kramer vs. Kramer"?

Little Billy doesn't like what Dad cooked for him, so he raids the freezer and starts to dig in to the chocolate ice cream, all the while Dustin Hoffman is continually warning him of "big trouble" if he puts that ice cream in his mouth.

Anyway, as for what I would do, I would make the kid eat all the ice cream, not just the dish in front of him, but ALL the ice cream in the house. Yep, even if there's a couple of gallons around. And the kid will NOT leave the table until it's all in the tummy. Ice cream headaches? OK, we'll provide the kid with a glass of lukewarm water nearby when the onset of those occur. Have to throw up? Fine, keep a bucket nearby when that happens. When finished, commence eating all the ice cream.

I promise, the kid will be sick of ice cream and may never touch it again. Broccoli and brussel sprouts will be eagerly-anticipated tasty treats when all is said and done. Lesson learned!!!

You have to answer this question. How does he get the ice cream? If you are giving it to him, you are allowing him to have it. Let him know that if he does not eat his dinner there is no thing called ice cream. You do the math.

Presumably you gave him the ice cream, why?

You make sweet desserts the reward for eating some or all of the dinner. No dinner, no dessert.

If the kid is just helping himself then he has little or no respect for your authority. Do you tell him "No".

Easy solution - don't buy icecream or put a lock on the freezer!

Who's running the show there, you or him? Sounds like he's pretty much calling the shots.
Children don't have to clean their plates but they do have to eat something healthy at each meal. Get rid of the ice cream and limit his foods to healthy fruits and veggies. He'll piss and moan and whine but when he gets hungry, he's going to realize that what you've been trying to feed him isn't so bad.

He wouldn't, how could he get the ice cream without me giving it to him. He would sit up and eat, or sit there for a very long time, if he still wouldn't eat, he would have it for breakfast the next morning and lunch if I had to. I have 3 boys ages 6, 5 and 20 months. I don't make multiple meals and it is my job to see that they eat properly. I am pregnant with twins as well, so they just sit up and eat and very rarley do we have issues.

The need to eat something, but I would not allow sugary foods, and I would not cook them something else. I'm sure that there was something on the plate that they would eat, so as long as they ate ate least one thing off of it they are not going to be starving.

Ice cream would not have been offered to him at all.

The rule in our house is you eat what is cooked for the family or you eat PBJ. No special cooking.......works very well. Heck, there are days when my husband opts for the PBJ. But it is a good example for the kids and so far so good.

Well, if my child didn't like the dinner I made...he certainly wouldn't get ice cream. If anything...he'd get a sandwich..but no dessert unless he ate dinner first. :)

I wouldn't serve him ice cream and would let him go to bed hungry if he chose not to eat what I made.
