Hello, I am a Junior at my High School and have been a sprinter since i joined Track my Freshman year. I am about 5'7" 150lbs. I run the 55m to the 400m. I tend to do better in 200m-400m, because of my long strides, but I have problems getting out of my blocks, or gettin a good stance. I was just wondering if i could get some tips on block starts or any kind of drills to improve how fast i start out? Please and Thankyou! Any thing will help!

Starting

The angle of the knee joint of the forward leg should be 90 degrees in the set position.

The knee joint angle for the rear leg should be 120 degrees. The distance between block placements will be determined when these two angles are reached in the set position. The distance between blocks is usually 14-18in or 36-46cm.

Holding these angles, you should now move your hands so that the line from each hand to shoulder is perpendicular (90 degrees) to the ground. In this position, the distance between the hands, or start line, and the front block is determined. The angles of the block pedals should be roughly 45 degrees for the front pedal and 65 degrees for the rear.

In a set position, the arms should be perpendicular to the track, shoulders directly above the hands, and the front and rear leg angles 90 and 120 degrees, respectively.
For the force to be applied optimally, its direction must match the angle of acceleration. The angle of acceleration is the line from the ball of the foot to the center of mass when the knees are together in mid-stride. For most sprinters, this angle is about 50 degrees as they leave the blocks.

You need to get full extension out of the blocks and run with a pushing action for as far as possible. To be able to do this as far as possible means staying very forward with the whole body , keeping the head down.

I usually tell me kids to mark out their block position by measurements using their feet, the front of blocks should be 1/2 or1 step from the start line depending on the leg length, then the front block would be 1 step and a half from the line, back block 2 and a half steps from the line. make sure you are comfortable in the blocks your front leg is not too cramped, your back leg is not too straight

i also have a long stride, and i try to dig the tops my feet into the track as i start for the agression out of the blocks, keep your head down as you come out and pump your arms hard. push up and out away from the blocks not straight down, make sure that your in a comfortable position also
i hope this helps!

push off really hard off the blocks, keep ur body low and keep driving. dont get upright too quickly. when u do that it takes a bit longer to get to full speed. u probably should be completely upright and about to be in your full stride at about 40-50m. from there, just relax and dont tense up (that slows u down too) and finish ur race with the lean.
