any heavyweight lifting will gain muscle mass, legs are pretty easy target for it too.

Yes. but only if you do it with dumbells instead of freeweigh

Whenever you do excercise with weights, you are telling that part of the body that you need muscle.

Hence, squats with dumbells will give you muscle.

exercise only provides the necessary stimulus for growth, recovery and the diet determines how much muscle growth occurs.
