The 3 cars that are listed are very reliable and very good cars. I dont think you'll need to look at other models because you can find those 3 cars in that price range and it would probably be a 2000 or later model.
If the girl cant afford a new car now, dont buy it. Its not worth it to go into debt or to go broke just because she really wants a new car. She can always buy a new car later on when she can afford it because car makers will always make new and nice cars.

Ok, so she likes the jetta, solara, and the accord. The jetta is a great car. Actually, I've never heard a bad thing about VW. Personally, I would go with the Subaru Impreza. It's a very safe, reliable sedan. I got mine for 17k with 38,000 miles on it. It'll run about 300k miles before it dies on me. It's an 03 WRX which is a step up from the base model Impreza.
These are very safe cars also. I worked a wreck involving an STi (step up from the WRX) and a Caravan. The van hit the drivers side at 65mph and the driver of the got out of the passenger side with nothing but a few cuts. The reason for this is the way the cabin is built. There are 3 rings of reinforced steel, one at the base of the windshield, one at the B pillar (right behind the front doors) and one at the base of the rear window. These rings go completely around the car and they are interconnected. Next to the drivers head for example, there are 7 layers of steel surrounding a one inch think, twelve inch long boron reinforced steel rod protecting the drivers head. Also in a front end collision, the engine will slide beneath the car. Not into the cabin. This is because the engine is a boxer style where the pairs of pistons are 180 degrees from each other.
Aside from safety, Subaru's hold their resale value fairly well. They get decent gas mileage, mine is a turbo model and I'm getting 25 mpg in the summer months. Oh and all Subaru's are all wheel drive. It's the safest type of drive setups out there. You can go anywhere in just about any weather.

There are many good options for you. Are you looking for new or used? That will make a huge difference. Many new cars will offer rebates, be sure to ask a local dealership about those. If buying used be sure the warranty is still in effect. I suggest a Honda, they last a long time, The Chevy Cobalt 2 door can have some really nice features. Good Luck

Check out Consumer Reports. VW's get terrible ratings consistently. You could get a nice used Civic in that price range. There are a lot of Ford Focus's out there that seem to be decent cars. I would always go Honda or Toyota, if possible, but you could get a new Focus for that range. I highly recommend reviewing whatever you are looking at in the Automotive Edition of Consumer Reports (get it from your local library.)

It is possible to negotiate a new 2007 Ford Focus or Toyota Corolla for less than $15,000, inculding tax and license. Either one would be reliable and equipped with an automatic transmission and most desired goodies (CD/MP3 player, alloy wheels remote entry etc). Don't be intimidated by MSRPs that approach $17,000 on these cars, as they are heavily discounted and have hefty factory rebates (currently $2500 for the Focus) on each model. You should expect at least a 10% discount from MSRP before any available rebates. GOOD LUCK!

The Jetta and Accord are good.
Try an off-lease BMW or a used Lincoln Zephyr.

1) PLEASE do not go and buy a new car. Buy a car one or two years old. You'll be able to get a "$20K" car by letting someone else eat the first year depreciation.
2) Go to carmax.com and check out everything they have in that price range....great prices!
