Considering the extreme amount of money and time they spent on schooling, I guess they are entitled to a very good salary. However, I agree that a lot of the procedures are overpriced. I guess they figure most people have insurance and pay very little out of pocket.

Actually one needs to look at the costs Dentists must put up with from the suppliers of Dental products. I am in this industry and know the amount it costs to purchase all the medicaments, filling materials, instruments etc...You might pay something like $100+ (aus) for 5gms of filling material....$50 for a scaler....$1000 for an autoclave. Plus the costs of single use items usually attract an even bigger expense....Hence it is not the dentists fault they are only covering their costs. Dental companies are a major rip off. Hope this gives you some understanding....

I'm a dentist and I've never made $1500 in ten minutes but I could shed a little light on why dental treatment is expensive:
Cost of Dental School: $90,000 (does not include undergrad)
Cost of the dental chair you're sitting in: $12,000
Cost of the x-ray units: $4000-$50,000
Cost of equipment of start-up dental office BEFORE a single patient even darkens the door: $250,000-$500,000
I gave up about 8 years in the prime of my life to study dentistry. Believe me there were lots of things I would have rather been doing during those years besides studying.
...and when I hear people like you complain about the cost of their dental treatment and how dentists overcharge it makes me want to puke.
It sounds like the dentist treating you added a PITA charge on top of his regular fees to make it worth his time.

You need to keep in mind the fee any professional charges doesn't go entirely to them; they pay their staff, their own insurance, and for their office and equipment out of that money. I know some charge too much, but most of the dentists I have been too are reasonable and charge about the same thing. Personally, I wouldn't care to have you digging around in my mouth and drilling my teeth with no anesthesia or education!

Well, as long as its a general dentist, if you are not happy with them switch.
Lets consider the amount of dental school they (and I) will have to go through. It's $40,000 a year tuition if you want to go to a cheap dental school as well as you are paying for equipment costs.

I would rather pay big bucks and be pain free. And save my teeth. There is no amount of money that can do this. Pay up and appreciate that there are dentist who do good work.

I would love to know what someone did for 10 minutes that they charged $1,500 for. I want to start doing that procedure in my office. Often.

It is way too expensive for regular folk without insurance to pay for! It should be covered under regular health care insurance since they claim it is such an important part of health.

sure does sound like it would be a lot cheaper to actually brush and floss rather than let your teeth rot and need work in the first place.
with your attitude i'd charge you double just so you'd go somewhere else.
