First off I have to ask who's tattooing you at only 17 babe. Most reputable shops won't touch you unless you are 18. But that is besides the point I guess. I have 23 tattoos total including my entire back done. It really depends on how you deal with pain. For me it kind of felt like scratching and a little burning. You will probably be sitting sideways on a table or backwards on a chair. They will def roll your top up and probably fold your pants down. Just down squirm or move a lot. Remember this is permenent and they cannot erase mistakes, so the more still you are the better they will do. I would bring a jacket to kind of hug or lean on so you are more comfortable. Just make sure the place is clean and sterile. Also make sure you are comfortable with the artist. And do not take any sort of pain relief medicine before hand. It can actually make your blood thinner and make it harder to do your tattoo and it doesn't help with this sort of pain anyway. It really doesn't hurt that much especially if you really want the tattoo. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it!

I only have 2 tattoos, one on my ankle and one on my wrist. I didn't think the pain was bad on either but when my friend went in to get one she couldn't stand it and now has a small, random line on her back. To me it felt like very deep scratches from a cat with a sort of burning after the initial scratching. And there was a moment or two that I felt like stopping with both but it passed and then I was fine again. Honestly both of mine hurt more after I got it done than while I was actually getting it. I think while you're sitting in the shop you are so hyped up and have so much adreneline that it sort of blocks the pain. If you really want it and are willing to go all the way through with it then you should definitely have one done. If you aren't sure how you will tolerate the pain then I would start something you aren't sure you're going to be able to finish. You don't want a line across you back for the rest of your life and laser removal is far more painful than the tattoo, from what I've heard, and it leaves the scars. Not pretty. I'm already planning my next, so I obviously find the pain managable. Good luck with whatever you decide. :)

You have gotten a lot of really good answers. I am in the middle of having one done on my lower back. I have a tattoo on my right calf already but I really wasn't prepared for how much this one was going to hurt. I have just the outline done so far and am going back for the coloring and shading. I can tell you that for some reason every woman has a spot on her back that hurts worse than the other. For me it was my left side. It hurt worse than my spine or my right side. Tattoo's are no joke and do hurt, just be prepared for that. I am not going to tell you to suck it up or get over it because that wouldn't be fair to you. The pain is tolerable but remember NOT to flinch or jump. It will cause the needle to move and can mess with the design. Of course any good tattoo artist will be able to fix it but just try really hard not to move. Breathe as steady as you can and you will be fine. Have fun, it will be well worth it when it is finished.

first off, don't listen to the people that call it a tramp stamp. they are obviously ignorant.
as for how much pain to expect, like everyone has said, pain is relative. it will all depend on your threshold of pain. i don't have a tattoo on my lower back, but i do have some on my wrist and neck. the wrist, did not hurt too badly. the neck, hurt a whole lot more. my other ones are spread on my arms and back, and for the most part, if it's near my spine, it will tingle. the pain i feel is exactly what it is, needles stabbing you repeatedly, with a burning sensation added to it. it is not the most comfortable thing ever, but it certainly is not intolerable. once they are done, the pain is more of bruising and cuts.
there are also people that breeze through them without any pain. you should be ok.
just remember, DON'T MOVE!! good luck.

I'm gonna say "hold on to the design and wait another year, get it for your 18th"
BUT, because I know that nobody listens, especially us teenagers *i'm 17 going on 18, so you know* I'd say it'll hurt.
No one here knows how bad you feel it when you get a shot or otherwise stuck with a needle, and most intelligent people here know that pain is relative. I LOVE getting pireced while others won't do it because that little second of pain is too much to handle. Everyone's tolerance is different, from feeling as though they stick the needles in and just drag it through the skin *goes in and out, but they think it's in and only comes out when he's done or taking a break* and others compare it to a cat repeatedly liking them. It all depends.

I have three tattoos in all. One on my lower back, one on my shoulder, and one on my foot.
By far, the one that hurt the least was the one on my lower back. Some peopIe say that the lower back is a place where it hurts the most, but actually, I fell asleep during the tattoo.
Like you said, everyone has their own pain tolerance, but I think if you remember to breath, eat something sugery before you go in so you dont faint, you will be fine! Just try to focus in on what is happening and it helps you to get through it.
Just breath! Good luck!

it all depends on how well you tolerate pain. i have a tattoo on my back, it will eventually cover my whole back but i recently had an hour work done on my lower back and it hurt, the spine specifically hurts a lot, the nerves and all make it hurt all over. but it is totally bearable. the longer you get tattooed for the more it hurts. if you are getting a fairly small tattoo then it really won't be that bad but like i said, tons of people have lower back tattoos so they really aren't THAT painful or people wouldn't get them right? good luck! i hope you have found a talented artist to tattoo you, it really is the most important thing when getting a tattoo.

I would look up the information on different websites because that information will be alot more useful to you. Different people experience pain differently...what may be nothing to you may have me cringing. On these sites, you can learn alot about the tattoo machine, the needles used, procedure, etc. Reading about it on the sites and doing the homework myself actually took away alot of the fears I had before my tattoo. Not trying to say that you shouldn't take advice from YA but you know yourself best....and my experience may be totally different than yours.
as a start, just type tattoo into google...

I just got my lower back tattoo on friday and it is a good size lots of color. It hurt right in the middle of my back and for some reasons on the side it stung. When he started to do the coloring it felt like a bad sunburn that is being rubbed on over and over again. Just be prepared for the healing process because it does itch, mine itches like crazy, listen to what they tell you to do. Put plenty of lotion to keep it moist. Good luck

I, personally, never have gotten a tattoo, but I will someday. From what I've heard, people say it feels like someone's dragging a fishhook across your body, but If you want one that bad and have a high pain-tolerance, you should be ok. I'm also interested in the other answers that come in.
