It's based on the concept that women are superior to men. Men are the servant class and women are the royalty class.
Think of peasants rising in the presence of royalty.
Men are to serve women by sacrificing their personal comfort (provide a jacket or a seat) for any woman in their presence, protecting women (even at the risk of death), opening their doors (valet), and financing their needs and especially wants.

That courtly custom--which also dictates standing when a lady enters the room or arrives at a gentleman's table--came about in two ways. For the gentlemen, it was a way of showing clear proof of their regard for the lady, or ladies. For the ladies, it was a means of gauging their esteem in the eyes of the gentlemen present.

It is showing honor to stand up for someone. It shows that you will get up from where you are to show them respect. It used to be normal to stand to speak at school. Even for answering a question. It is the same for a woman who is entering or exiting the room. You show them respect because of the trials women go through in giving birth and raising kids. Every man was respectful to his mother, and it carried over to other women as well.
