First it is the law in many localities to use your seatbelt.

Second, if you do have the misfortune to get into an accident, having the seatbelt on will keep you inside the vehicle which is where you will be the safest rather than flying through the air and slamming into the ground, or other immovable objects.

Your body will be held against the seat which will keep you the most secure from whiplash and other injuries if you are hit.

The seatbelt keeps you in front of the steering wheel, which is especially important if the vehicle goes out of control in inclimate weather; you are better able to steer yourself and your passengers to safety.

The seatbelt enables you to stay in the best position for the rest of the vehicles safety
equipment such as airbags and the safety cage to protect you in the case of an accident.

I personally have been in two accidents, one where someone ran a light and hit me in an intersection. I was unhurt, as I was seatbelted. The other I hit a deer, and ended up totalling my car but was only shaken up and had a few bruises because I had my seatbelt on and when the airbags want off, the combination of the two kept me from going though the windshield.

The owner of the auto repair where the car was towed to, before it was totalled out by the insurance company. could not believe that I was not in the hospital with serious injuries. I walked into the auto repair office to find out what was going on with the insurance and reports and all, and he almost fell out of his chair.

I actually also knew a woman who was killed in a rather minor accident, as she was not seatbelted, and ended up going up into the windshield and breaking off the rear view mirror, and the shaft of the mirror went through her skull. Sorry to be so graphic, but I think about that accident whenever I see someone driving without a seatbelt. I happened to know some of the rescue staff at that accident and they said that she would have been fine if she had been wearing her seat belt.

Nascar drivers wear one, they must know something.

The car body is much tougher than a human body.

The seat belt keeps you inside the tougher car body.

Windshields turn your face to hamburger if you go through one.

In most states its the law now and you can get a ticket for not wearing one.

Notice I placed the health benefits ahead of the law. I started wearing a belt in 1966 before it was a law because I figured the Nascar guys were onto something...
