There are certain guidelines for each state. You would need to look up the guidelines and laws in your state. Here in Texas there are basically none other than the kids must be taught certain subjects (math, reading/lang.arts, science, history, and the like - basic core curriculum). Also in Texas you do not have to keep records for the state to be able to look at. However, it is a good idea to keep records so that should you decide to enroll in a private or public school you have something to show them as to what kind of work the child has been doing. I will say that it takes a lot of discipline on the parent and the child's part as well as structure (not rigid though). It has been very rewarding for us since I started with my son this year. He has some medical issues that forced him to miss quite a bit of school for his first three years so I went with homeschooling and it has been good so far. So much so that I am not sure that I will put him back in "regular" school until he is in junior or senior high, if then.
Hope this helps.

research, and more research
what are your state requirements?
what is it about home schooling that you find more desirable than what you expect a public or private school experiences provide?
what are you educational goals and philosophies?
there are a wide array of options for homeschooling, everything from recreating a public school experience at home to very rigid, structured programs to unschooling.
Homeschooling is exciting stuff. The more I learn about it's many possibilities the more I'm enthused about designing my children's curricula. The possibilities are endless and I don't want to be restrained by a single source plan.

Research the Internet and find the best programs you can get. Also, make sure that your child learns how to write sentences and paragraph when young, and essays when they are older. Find playmates that they can have exercise with.
