There are many things you can do to fight depression.

First, eat healthy and regularly. If you don't feel like eating, still eat a little bit so your blood sugar isn't contantly going up and down. Don't underestimate how your physical health can affect your mood.

Second, do try to exercise. Even if it's just walking a bit every day.

Third, try to understand the root of your depression. When you become depressed, write down your thoughts and feelings. Determine what your negative thoughts are and work on keeping them from pulling you down into depression.
Often depression starts with little negative thoughts and leads to irrational thinking.
Do some research on this and you will see what I mean.

Find motivational things that can make you feel better and use them whenever you need them.

Also, it does help to have a good counselor if you can find one.

And last, seek help from others. Establish a support system. Find people you know you can count on when you start to feel down - and call them or find some way to talk to them!

Exercise is the best, although if you are really depressed it can be hard to start.
Try doing something nice for yourself. Go to lunch with a friend, if you have kids or a pet, take them on a walk or to the park, do a craft, or even watch a funny movie with a giant bowl of ice cream. That always makes me feel better.
And after the ice cream, you will need to exercise!

Get plenty of sleep at night, exercise and eat the right foods. Talk to a friend or adult if you are feeling particularly bad. You may be able to take some medication for this. Ask your doctor. Prayer and meditation are very helpful.

I PROMISE you almost no situation is absolutely good or absolutely bad. And if a situation is absolutely bad it will not last forever. We each have the power to choose to dwell on the bad aspects of our lives OR the good aspects of our lives. If you want to, you can find good aspects to focus on, no matter how bad your situation may be. This is a 100% true story, and I think about it any time I feel sorry for myself or feel like my situation is crappy and hopeless.

My neighbors across the street were a retired couple. They were in their mid 60's and were pretty much a typical retired mid 60's aged couple. Well, one morning, the husband woke up and said his leg was in so much pain he couldn't get out of bed. This guy was a TOUGH old man too, he was the type who, when his grandkids slammed the car door on his fingers, he just asked them to open the door so he can get out of the car, and never mentioned the fact that all his fingernails had turned purple and fallen off.

A couple days passed and he still couldn't get out of bed. His wife made him go to the doctor and it turned out that he had lung cancer and it had metastasized in his leg (and pretty much the rest of his body.) The doctors put him on chemo and radiation, and knew that he was basically going to die in a couple of months or sooner. Both the husband and wife aged about 10 years in the next couple weeks, as he went for his chemo treatments. It was depressing for me to watch, even from my safe distance across the street.

I was walking my dog one day and I saw the wife out in her yard, feeding the birds. And I stopped and talked to her. I asked her how her husband was doing. And she said, "You know, we really are lucky to live in a town with a cancer treatment center. We see these couples who have to go through the same thing we do, but then they have to drive 6 hours to get home. You know that ride is a miserable one!"

I get tears in my eyes even now when I think about that... She was watching her husband die a painful and unexpected death and she said, "You know, we really are lucky..."

And I promised myself right then, that I would NEVER let myself get depressed again.
