I brush my teeth 3 times a day + right before I go out with friends and I use mouth wash constantly! I just want to know if anyone of you have found any real good solutions for bad breath, it almost seems like it may be more than just in my mouth and maybe from an internal source, lol I can't believe I'm posting this.... Any suggestions?

Hi I am actually a certified dental assistant and what some people do not realize is that no matter how many times they brush their teeth they still may experience halitosis (bad breath) which is associated with not brushing their tongues. The tongue acts like a shag carpet does with dirt. The bacteria just get down in there and multiplies causing an odor. Try brushing your tongue every time that you brush your teeth. It is normal to have a gagging reflex but try to get past this and do as best as you can on brushing the tongue.

LOL Don't feel bad. No one here knows who you are. Ha.

A lot of older people who suffer from constipation also have bad breath. The digestive tract is all part of one long tube, so you are right that something else might be going on. It could be that whatever you ate earlier is traveling up in the form of gas. Hows your BMs? (Don't answer that...just think about it...I don't want to know...ha.) Adding more fruits and veggies to your diet and having less meats will make your digestive tract move along much more efficiently. Meats take longer to digest so they stay in your tract much longer, getting smelly. Most importantly, have some fiber.

This is just my theory. I became a vegetarian 8 months ago and have noticed these changes.

Most bad breath arises from the tongue - not the teeth. Buy one of those tongue scrapers at the drugstore and use it every time you brush. You will see a coating of white (bacteria) come off with the scraping motion. This should do wonders for keeping your breath fresher. I began using one several years ago and even my 'morning breath' isn't that bad.

P.S. Brushing the tongue isn't nearly as effective as scraping it.
The toothbrush just seems to spread the gunk around instead of actually lifting it off.

Other than using mint flavoured mouth wash, use peppermint flavoured gum! I have some with me all the time for that purpose, mostly I just chew it for a few seconds and stick it back in the case. heh.

or buy those little peppermints you get in the metal tins. They're incredibly pepperminty and freshen your breath really fast. I think peppermints are better than gum since you don't have to spit it out later on or in my case stick it back into the case.

Actually, you should start with a dentist. They have the training to trace the source of bad breath. It may be simple, but if it were I think you would have solved it already. Get the professionals help and be able to talk close to friends rather than talking to close friends.

Hi there. I knew someone who had the exact same problem and it turned out to be a chronic sinus infection. Your feelings are probably right, it is internal and not anything that you are doing or not doing. You should see a doctor about it. Abnormal halitosis is a sign of several medical conditions.....don't be embarassed!

Sometimes you can have bad breath associated to an ongoing sinus problems or stomach problems.
If you think it is related to anything besides oral hygiene, see a doctor.
