If someone is getting their drivers license in America, shouldn't they have to read and speak English? All are road signs are in English. That seems really unsafe. I think the driving written test, should only be given in English. What do you think?

Yes, i think they need to know how to speak/read English.
Do they expect us to put multilingual signs and symbols for them? They're here, they should learn to adapt to us. Maybe not way of life or thinking, but at least learn the language.
Its like that old saying, 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do'.

That would never work unless you planned on banning all international drivers licenses and not allowing Americans to drive abroad. Oh and we better ban a illiterates from driving.

The US has military bases in Germany, Japan, Korea, South America. Should military personel be required to learn the local languages to drive there? What if Mexico makes is a requirement that everyone must speak Spanish to drive there. And what about Puerto Rico? The US Spanish speaking territory.

There's a reason most signs in the world are made to be understood by anyone. I'm sure it wouldn't take long to teach a Spanish speaker the words "stop" and "yield"

Well, they should be able to read basic English, but most road signs are pictures, so that's not really a problem. There are foreign tourists who rent cars in the U.S., after all.

As for the driving test being only in English, what are you trying to test: knowledge of the driving laws or English? If you want to make sure drivers who are legal residents of the U.S. know the laws, then the test should be available in a variety of languages, as well as simplified English.

Believe it or not, the only driver's license that you must speak English for is a Commercial Driver's License.

It doesn't seem fair, but that's the way DMV does it.

I agree that if you are going to live in whatever country you should make an attempt to learn the language even if just a little. I speak two languages and hear alot of people say that "if they live in US than they should speak english". My response is that most of our ancestors didn't speak english at first either. As a people, we should embrace differences instead of "pointing them out". We all belong to one race....the human race.

Yes, I think you should have to speak English, just like if I moved to France I should learn French. It amazes me how everyone else makes the effort to learn English, but certain groups think society should adapt to them instead.

no,

just know how to read the signs.

if you are tranferred because of your job to germany, should you need to know to read and write german when all you need to do is learn the rules of the road and memorize what the signs mean.

(just like you must do over here!)
