Let's see: astronomy, biology, physics, genetics, literary analysis, philosophy, history, geology, comparative religions/geography, paleontology, anthropology ... goodness, what DOESN'T threaten religion? Oh yeah, business.

While most academic disciplines threaten religion, I'd say that all forms of science (that can be taught in public schools) have the most potential. As for why, it's mostly because the idea of God was originally meant to make up for a lack of understanding of the natural world, which science is now doing very well and with much evidence backing its theories. As science replaces God, first through the fields of biology (evolution; how humans came to be) and later into astrophysics (how was the universe created?), the necessity of God is lessened. If there is ever a time that science can explain EVERYTHING, then that is when God becomes obsolete as a Creator.
I think philosophy is a close second in the race, though, since it has an emphasis on logical thought and involves the questioning of everything.

You are looking at it from the wrong perspective.
The problem is that today, the disciplines that you mention conform to anti-religious bias. True science doesn't conflict with true religion. Scientist used to realize that some subjects are not subject to scientific analysis.
Comparative religion is predicated on the idea that all religious belief systems are of equal merit. So, Christianity is an a par with Carribe Indians who are practicing cannibalism. The very idea of comparative religion is that one who teaches it is somehow in a position superior to all religion.
These areas are not a threat to religion. They do have the effect of undermining religious belief in the case of people who don't have firm religious underpinnings. These people never think about how we can know history, when there was nobody there to write it. How can we know science, when nobody observed it? Oh that's right, we just listen to the experts!

in my opinion, no academic disciplines threaten religion.. they may threaten the beliefs of some people, but they don't threaten the entire religion.. it just depends on how willing people are to incorporate their beliefs into the new discoveries.. I know Christians who believe the Universe is only a few thousand years old.. that doesn't mean all Christians believe that though.. it doesn't make sense to me because we can see light from stars that are billions of light years away.. so that must mean the light must have been travelling for billions of years to reach us..

actually business can threaten religion too. What if your business is a restaurant? you have a good business on Sunday right after church, but that means you have to be working on the sabbath, which goes against God;s law.
Actually all academic disciplines threaten religion, because the use of logic and reason instead of blind unthinking faith is detrimental to all religions.

Philosophy teaches critical thinking. Critical thinking for self threatens cult religion but not all. Unitary Church encourage philosophy and critical think.

archeology....oh wait nevermind, it confirms it. And all the above mentioned disciplines support Christianity as well, especially literary analysis and history. In fact, business is the biggest threat: Jesus went into the church where the money collectors were counting and chased them out with a whip. Maybe you should try academics.

Nothing threatens religion. Religion is man made not God made. And God created astronomy, biology, physics, genetics, etc....
