I have polycystic ovary syndrome and for my first baby, took a combination of clomid and metformin with no problems. This time around, things have been a little different. I have been taking at least 200 mg of Advil almost everyday for the last year because of arthritis and am unsure if that is something that can cause the lactic acidosis or not. Has anyone had a similar experience? It's confusing because some of the symtoms to look out for as far as lactic acidosis are similar to the side effects for metformin. If anyone has any answers for me, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

It is well known that there is drug interaction between Advil and metformin. Therefore, please don't worry about Advil can enhance the side effect of metformin. In addition, it is rare to have lactic acidosis caused by metformin or by Advil. Yes, the warning about lactic acidosis in the prescription of metformin stresses that the patient need to pay attention to it. It is because a structurally similar drug called phenformin was known to cause lactic acidosis and was baned in the 70'. The most popular side effect of Advil is stomach upset. However, it is unlikely to have this side-effect since 200 mg/day is not heavy dose.
Please consult your doctor about how you feel and there are many drugs that can be used for arthritis. In addition, loss weight is helpful for polycystic ovary syndrome since it is recognized that insulin-resistance is associated with polycystic ovary syndrome.
