They can not audit something that they don't have yet

No. Returns aren't reviewed for audit flags until after the filing deadline in most cases since many taxpayers catch errors before the deadline and correct them with an amended return.

There are a couple of exceptions to that though. They have been looking at the Earned Income Tax Credit more closely due to lots of fraud. And they always review dependent SSNs to make sure that no more than one taxpayer claims any given dependent.

No, audits for 2006 wouldn't start until after the filing deadline, April 17.

If your return isn't filed by the deadline for any year, yes you could be audited for those years.

You sure can, they want you to bring all your papers and show why you didn't file. Remember they already know of any income related to your social security record.
