If you are looking for a purebred that is not milled check out
http://www.akc.org for reputable breeders in your area.

Aside from that, keep checking the local animal shelter.

Pet stores may order one in for you, but make sure it is not puppy milled

Okay, I was thinking more about my answer and there is another way to adopt a cheaper dog without going through a puppy mill. It will take a little extra work to look for the dog though.

You should try to adopt a retired adult yorkie from a reputable breeder. This adult dog will be cheaper than a puppy.

Contact the AKC. American Kennel Club. Then get breeders in your area. Specify that you are looking for a retired breeder dog. Check out the breeder yourself.

Please don't support puppy mills.

*******

I had a yorkie that I adopted from a shelter-- he was an amazing dog, too! But honestly, it's hard to find a yorkie at a shelter or at petfinder (which I love) because they don't often go to shelters. I f you do find a yorkie in a shelter-- it gets adopted in a few days!

Try a specific yorkie rescue.

But also, it's cheap people who want "reasonable" prices who support puppy mills!

Puppy mills are absolutely horrible. They keep the dogs in horrible conditions (matted fur, urine soaked cages, sores on the feet from the cages, no vet care whatsoever) all so they can give people "reasonable" puppies--

Imagine how much you love your dog-- now imagine that the puppies parents are living in HELL. Because that's the truth when you get a dog at a "reasonable" price. Those are puppy mill dogs for sure.

Save up your money (for a year or two) for a responsible breeder that takes care of the parents and checks for health problems.

A yorkie can live well into their teens... paying $2,500 for a well bred, well socialized, healthy dog... that will last 14 years is a life-long committment.

Plus yorkies have really small litters so that makes the dog more expensive. Little dogs like maltese, poodles and yorkies are just simply expensive dogs. Ask around to reputable breeders and you will see how much money they put into these dogs. They are expensive to breed if you keep the health of these little dogs in mind.

Big dogs are cheaper, that's just a fact.

Save up your money!

Don't support puppy mills!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why don't you take a serious look at the other breeds in the toy group? Yorkies being the second most popular breed right now and the first most popular toy breed have a lot of competition as far as buyers go, But there are several lovely toy breeds that are small I am sure you would like. Also be sure to check out the videos that are linked to these pages. BTW I have been going to dog shows since the 60s and I have had toy breeds, my favorite is the Japanese Chin which can also be very small. Absolutely fabulous temperaments and they are smart and clowns.

I have one. As I understand it, his mother was a purebred American Eskimo Spitz, and his father was half-Spitz/half-Yorkie. I didn't talk to the breeder personally, though, so I'm not sure on that. He is larger than a Yorkie, definitely more on the Spitz side. And he has a predominantly white coat with brown splotches (as a puppy, he had some black on him as well). Although his fur gets knotted at times, he is a very pretty dog. In temperament, he's a grouch. He loves me and my mother, but he merely tolerates the rest of the family. He barks ferociously at guests until they've been in our house long enough for him to see that they won't hurt anyone, and then he usually just ignores them. He disdains other dogs, particularly my sister's dog (who refuses to leave him alone when they're in the same room). Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of him on my phone to show, but you can probably get a pretty good understanding of how he looks from the description.

What ever you do, PLEASE do not buy one from a pet store. Most puppies in a pet store are from puppy mills and they are horrible. Chances are, your new pet store puppy will be from a puppy mill and will have health problems for the rest of it's life. You can do a general search for "yorkshire terrier breeders" which should yield you a clickable map to select your state. You can find a breeder in your area/state and actually see the puppy and visit the parents before buying it. Best of luck!

Here are some...

All you have to pay is a reasonable adoption fee!All these dogs need a second chance! Why breed or bye when one will die??

These are the little things we can do to change a dogs life,to give him a second chance! What dog doesn't deserve one??They sure do :)

I'm not going to make you-but if you look through, you might find the perfect pup!

Hi.....you may want to check out petfinder.com. There you can put in your zip code and the breed you are looking for and find one at a shelter. There are also shelters and foster parents for certain breeds that are special to some people and they focus on that breed for adoption. You'll find that info there. Good luck finding your new family member.

Go to Yahoopets, and search for a teacup yorkie in your area. If there aren't any, just search the breed, and no location. That is what I did, and I found one in Houston, and one in Pasadena. They are a completely different state, but I they can ship, for a low cost.
