To get it completely lighter, a full tip to root job, you need professional products. To get a nice sun-streaked look, Fill a cheap spray bottle with lemon juice (you can get big bottles at the grocery store). Give your hair a good spritz after your shower etc before leaving for the day. The lemon juice will help the sun lighten your hair and will keep your hair smelling great most of the day. Lemon juice also removes the smell of smoke from a bar etc.

for natural looking hair lightening, at home and inexpensive---try this----> buy: a box of chamomile teabags
a bottle of hydrogen peroxide
a bottle of real lemon juice
a squirt bottle (like for wetting down hair)
first brew the tea strong (you can just microwave a mug of water on high for about 2min.30sec., then drop in 2 chamomile teabags and let them steep for about 5 minutes. then pour all three liquids into the squirt bottle in a 1:1:1 ratio---that is, equal parts of each, so it is full of one third tea, one third lemon juice, and one third peroxide. shake gently just to make sure it's all mixed. spray this onto your hair until saturated, brush through to distribute evenly...let sit for about 10 minutes and spray on some more until hair is thoroughly wet....then blowdry on medium to high heat, preferably on medium speed setting (or high if your dryer doesn't have a medium speed). Dry completely, repeat if you want, but don't do this more than twice a week or your hair and scalp will feel dry and maybe irritated. Your hair will seem a little lighter immediately, but a bit more noticeable after about 4 hours (don't wash right away). An equally effective way (weather permitting) is to then go outside on a sunny day and let the sun dry your hair and bring out the highlights. The change will not be very dramatic from just a couple times, which is good because you can better control how light you want to go and it can be gradual so that you don't just suddenly one day appear to have bleached the crap out of your hair. I suggest this routine once a week for 2-4 weeks until you are satisfied that your hair is light enough...but not much more past that because anytime you lighten your hair it will be a bit more brittle and breakable.

Lemon juice. Wet you hair with lemon juice then stand out in the sun until it dries. I did this a lot in high school and it works the same as that sun in stuff that you get in the hair care department of most stores.

Mix hydrogen peroxide into your shampoo, then wash your hair. This gives you a controlled method of gradually lightening your hair every time you wash it. When it gets as light as you want it to be, switch to regular shampoo and save the peroxide shampoo for touching up your roots as they come in.

Actually yes. You can buy these little packets of lemon juice and that works. My close friend used it once to lighten up her hair but I think that something happened. Nothing bad though, but I would try that.
