New York is a great city - it's also an expensive city.
Manhattan below 96th St is the rich part of the city - and it costs major bank to live there! Expect to pay $ 3,000 a month for a one room apartment - or $ 750,000 dollars to buy that apartment as a coop.
In the largely Black and Latino working class parts of the city -Upper Manhattan, the southern Bronx, northern Brooklyn, western and southeastern Queens and the north shore of Staten Island, you can rent a 1 bedroom apartment for $ 1,200 bucks or buy one for $ 350,000
You can find slightly higher housing prices in the middle income parts of the city - South Shore of Staten Island, southern Brooklyn, northeastern Queens and the northern Bronx. You'll pay a bit more in rent, and you'll have longer travel time to midtown or downtown Manhattan.
New York City has great public services (the best mass transit system in America, great public schools and the largest city police department in the world) and we pay high taxes for them (but about 10% of the city workforce - including me - work for the city, so it balances out)
New York is a little different than other American cities - it's a lot more multiethnic (over 100 languages are spoken here - the major ones are English, Spanish, the Mandarin, Cantonese and Fukinese dialects of Chinese, Haitian Kreyol, Yiddish, Russian, Hindi, Urdu, Korean and Italian) and unlike most Americans most of us do not drive (we take the subway or the bus - and on special occasions we take a cab - most of us don't even own a car or have a license).
Also, because there are 8 million of us in a 215 square mile city (and we get 4 million suburban commuters in our city every day) we're very good at minding our own business (you have to be to survive in such close quarters with so many strangers).
But, most of us who were born here wouldn't live anywhere else!

It's a wonderful city, and once you live there it's hard to move back to the suburbs or a smaller city. I am in Milwaukee right now and I freak out when I can't have 24 hour food delivery or walk two blocks to a coffee shop, or have a dance party to go to every night or go shopping for vintage clothing at 10pm or go on my roof and see the skyline and the bridges lit up and see people living their lives in their own apartments. There is a huge feeling of community, yet, at the same time, everyone does mind their own business.
It is a huge plus not having to drive. Public transportation is very good.
We have great farmers markets that are open year round, amazing cheap restaurants everywhere you go, hardly any chain restaurants, a wonderfully diverse mix of people and neighborhoods... it's expensive, but if you look hard you can usually find an affordable place in Brooklyn or Queens, especially if you have roommates.
I love New York, hate being away from it and can't wait to be back home.

IT IS UNBELIEVABLE PLACE TO LIVE AS THERE ARE TONS OF THINGS TO DO AND PLENTY OF EDUCATION AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES. THE LIVING COST MAY BE CONSIDERED EXPENSIVE COMPARED TO OTHER STATES BUT IT DEFINITELY WORTH IT. THE ATMOSPHERE CAN BE DESCRIBED AS CROWDED AND EVEREYONE IS ALWAYS ON THE RUN MINDING THEIR OWN BUSINESS. IT IS THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS WITH 24 HOUR ENTERTAINMENT. IT IS ABSOLUTEY GORGEOUS AND A PLACE TO WORK AND HAVE A BLAST. I LOVE IT AND SO WILL YOU.
WOO-HOO!
