It sounds like it might be a Mackerel Tabby.
Check it out at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabby_cat
They are striped, with a variety of patterns. The classic "blotched" tabby (or "marbled") pattern is the most common and consists of butterflies and bullseyes. The "mackerel" or "striped" tabby is a series of vertical stripes down the cat's side (resembling the fish). This pattern broken into spots is referred to as a "spotted" tabby. The tabby markings may look like a series of ticks on the fur, thus the "ticked" tabby, which is almost exclusively associated with the Abyssinian breed of cats. The worldwide evolution of the cat means that certain types of tabby are associated with certain countries; for instance, blotched tabbies are quite rare outside NW Europe, where they are the most common type.
A tabby is a cat with a distinctive coat that features stripes, dots and/or swirling patterns. Tabbies are often mistakenly assumed to be a breed of cat. In fact, the tabby pattern is a naturally occurring feature that may be the original coloration of the domestic cat's distant ancestors. Tabby coloration is found in many breeds of cat, as well as among the general 'moggy' (mixed-breed or mongrel) population. When cats are allowed to breed randomly, the coloration of the population tends toward brown mackerel tabbies with green eyes, like humans with brown hair and green eyes, leading geneticists to believe that this is the common wild phenotype of the domestic cat.
I hope this helps.

He sure sounds like a tabby. of my six cats I'd say 4 are tabbys 'cause they have very clear stripes on their legs, a couple across each cheek and some rings around their their tails. Tabbys can be long-haired, medium, or short-haired and can come in almost any color but NOT calico.
My other cats, dispite having a very clear M marking on their forhead have NO stripes/rings any where on their bodies. I don't consider them to be tabbies.
I believe the balck stripes makes your kitty a tabby. Congrats

It sounds like a brown or black tabby. However, I have a brown tabbie who, in addition to the normal tabby stripes, also has some orange spots like a tortiseshell would have, and I did some research and found out that she is actually what's called a "torbie", a mix between tabby and tortie.

Basically he is just a regular brown tabby cat, not a specific breed. Tabby refers to his coat pattern. If his hair is short, they are sometimes called a domestic short hair. I have one too - he's the greatest.

There are different colors of tabbies. I have an orange (red) tabby All tabbies are marked with an "M" on their forehead. Yours sounds like a tiger, tabby . I always tell people that is why I called my cat Mike, he has his initial on his forehead. And by the way....any cat striped or not , with an "M" on their forehead is a tabby, even though they may have different coat patterns.

The name "tabby cat" brings to mind many different things to different people. The old phrase "alley cat" may come to mind with some people: the rough-coated, scar-nosed, tattered-eared lurker of alleys and dumpsters. Others, myself included, will think of their favorite cats. Indeed, I can't remember a time when our home has not been graced by one or more tabby cats.

If he has short hair he is known as a DSH or domestic short hair, if he has long hair he is known as a DLH or domestic long hair. The stripes indicate his coat pattern as tabby. The color is just that, color. I have an orange tabby that is short haired so he is known as an orange DSH tabby.

I agree, Mackerel Tabby. That's my best guess without a picture.
