The industry will never, never take action until it is more economical than overfishing using environmentally irresponsible methods. As for the consumers, there are many factors that say that they might never stop their rampant consumption. First, more than 50% of the world's population now lives in "urban" areas and are therefore more detached from nature. Their fish and other food comes from the supermarket and thats as far as they associate their consumption. For example, blue-fin tuna are very rare and mostly highly contaminated, but just a couple of years ago, a 500 lb. blue-fin tuna was caught off the coast of Cape Hatteras, and was sold for $1.5 million dollars in Japan. This kind of consumption by every culture and nation perpetuates our overconsumption and keeps the demand up for the industry to keep overfishing our oceans.
